Prague, the City of hundred spires, the Magic City, The Golden City - these are only a few of the many attributes that have been invented for Prague, the metropolis and the capital of the Czech Republic. Prague, the Royal Seat to many emperors and kings, is sought after, admired and praised for its rich beauty, the wealth of its artistic collections and architectural monuments, the great cultural life and its rich ancient history.
The medieval town of Prague developed on the site of earlier Slav settlements (the first Slavs arrived in the 5th century). Originally, Prague included the Prague Castle (founded after 870), Vysehrad (founded in 1070), the Old Town (about 1230), the Jewish Town - Josefov (1091), the Lesser Quarter (1257) and the New Town (1348). Today Prague covers a total of 497 sq. km and from its terraces and hills, it overlooks the Vltava river, the national symbol. Thanks to its location and terrain, Prague offers a wealth of breath-taking panorama views. |
